Sangiovese is a red grape native to Italy where it is the most widely planted grape varietal and is the backbone to some of the best Italian wines such as Chianti and Super Tuscans. Our Sangiovese comes from the “Ancestors Block”, our estate-grown five-acre block located next to the Hopland Cemetery which is CCOF certified organic.
The 2013 harvest season is going to be remembered as one of the best in recent years. The weather conditions during spring were good and frost did not pose a threat, while the summer had plenty of sunshine but never spiked out of hand and the rains did not arrive until the later part of the season. In summary, it was a winemaker’s dream that provided grapes that were fully ripe, with great balance of flavors and aromas and amazing personality.
The nose is dominated by red fruit such as cherry, cranberries and red apple, with an undertone of cedar box and bay leaf, contributing to an herbal finish. This medium-bodied wine displays a high level of acidity and firm tannins that contribute to a long lasting finish.
