Vineyard

Nero D’Avola is an Italian grape from Sicily grown at Chiarito Vineyard, owned and farmed by John Chiarito. John is a second generation Italian-American who planted his vineyard just east of Ukiah, twelve miles north of Hopland. This vineyard is head-pruned, dry-farmed and cultivated in a very unique and old style method of farming consisting of plowing and cross cultivating, forcing the roots to go deep down in the soil, thus maximizing the expression of the site to its full potential. The warm days and cool nights of inland Mendocino County are ideal for growing Nero D’Avola.

Harvest notes

2013 started with a wet spring, followed by a late start and a long cool growing season which ended with a heat spike, allowing grapes to reach maturity at lower sugars and high acid levels than the usual warmer years. This year’s wines are lighter and more elegant in style yet deep in colors and flavors.

Winemaker’s notes

Dark fruit such as fig, plums and blackberries dominate the nose with an undertone of mushroom which contributes to an earthy note. The mouth exhibits soft tannins with nice mid-palate, which is complemented well by the high acid level ending in a balanced finish.
