Vineyard

Montepulciano is an Italian red grape that is believed to have originated in Tuscany, and in Italy it is the second most widely disperse indigenous grape varietal after Sangiovese. Our Montepulciano comes from Fox Hill Vineyard, a 150-acre ranch owned and managed by Lowell Stone. Located 8 miles north of the town of Hopland along the banks of the upper Russian River and sitting at 750 feet of altitude on a west-facing slope, this site provides outstanding conditions for growing this very late ripening red varietal.

Harvest notes

The 2013 harvest season followed the same pattern of excellent quality as the 2012 vintage. Winter brought with itself a vast amount of rain, followed by one of the driest springs and summers in a long time. Harvest commenced about two weeks earlier than average allowing for all grapes to be picked before the arrival of rain. In summary, 2013 was another amazing vintage, providing all elements to make outstanding wines with mature tannins and flavors and aromas that truly show a sense of place.

Winemaker’s notes

Notes of black fruit such as dried prune and plum dominate the nose with a hint of red cherry in the background. This wine is medium bodied and shows excellent mid-palate, with soft tannins that coat the whole mouth promoting a long-lasting and elegant finish.

Winemaker’s notes

Hints of phenol, orchids and lemon peel dominate the nose with a subtler undertone of red apple and Asian pear. The palate exhibits great minerality, which is complemented well by the high level of acidity contributing to a crisp finish.
