Syrah is a red grape from the northern Rhone region in France, where it can be found a standalone wine or used in blends. Our Syrah comes from Fairbairn Ranch, a vineyard located directly south of Campovida. Joe and Julie Golden own this biodynamically farmed vineyard southeast of the town of Hopland along the banks of the upper Russian River. The “Redvine” soil combined with a northwesterly exposure provides an ideal site for growing world-class Syrah.
The 2012 harvest season is going to be remembered as one of the best in recent years. Frost in spring did not pose a threat, and summer gave plenty of sunshine but temperatures never spiked out of hand, meanwhile the rain did not arrive until the later part of the season. In summary, the 2012 harvest season was a winemaker’s dream that provided grapes that were fully ripe, with great balance of flavors, aromas and amazing personality.
Dark fruit such as blackberries, blackcurrant and plums dominate the nose with a layer of black pepper and dark chocolate in the background. The mouth displays very firm tannins that contribute to a big and bold finish.
